Agreement between India and Peru in the field of Medicinal Plants |

Indian Union Cabinet has recently approved the signing of an agreement between the National Medicinal Plants Board, Ministry of AYUSH of the Republic of India and the National Institute of Health of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Peru, on cooperation in the field of medicinal plants.
India is one of the richest countries in the world in terms of biodiversity and is a herb garden of more than 7000 species of plants. India has been focusing on utilizing this resource for a long to treat patients using medicinal plants in the line of traditional ways of treatment using Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy. On the other hand, Peru is one of the most famous biodiversity hot spots in the world and is home to a wide variety of healing herbs. Peru also practices traditional ways of treating patients using herbs as we practice in India. Considering these facts both the countries have proposed to sign an agreement in the area of medicinal plants for proper utilization of resources and to increase the production of healing herbs . The Union Cabinet members are seeing this step to be an important one in enhancing the existing friendship and cooperative relations between the two nations.
The agreement was signed on the 28th of August, 2019 and the activities between these two nations have been decided to start immediately after signing of the Agreement. The initiatives taken by these two nations will be in accordance with the terms of the reference of the Agreement and will continue until the agreement remains in operation. Till now no additional financial implication is involved within the Agreement.
Both the countries have taken this step to strengthen bilateral cooperation and improve the terms of trade between each other in a most unique and remarkable way. It has been decided that the financial resources necessary to conduct research, training courses, conferences, or meetings will be met from the existing allocated budget and existing plan schemes of the National Medicinal Plants Board, Ministry of AYUSH.
